Artifacts From the Second Floor

The Samuel Crocker Lawrence Library on the second floor of Grand Lodge is home to an incredible collection of historical items. The collection, which is curated by Bro. Walter Hunt, recently became the home of a 200 year old document with the signature of our Past Grand Master Isaiah Thompson.

In January of 1937, the sitting Grand Master, Claude L. Allen, received a letter from the sitting Scottish Rite Sovereign Grand Commander of the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction, Melvin M. Johnson. In the letter Illustrious Johnson, who served as Grand Master for Massachusetts from 1914 to 1916, elaborates on the significance of the Thompson document. Bro. Thompson served as Grand Master from 1803 to 1805 and evidence suggests that the Thompson document was signed when he was Grand Master, making it well over 200 years old. Additionally, the envelope is embossed with the Official Seal of the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts. The envelope, along with the letter from Illustrious Johnson, makes this particular artifact twice as impressive.
